1ST GRADE NEWSLETTER ~ MARCH 6-10, 2017

Religion:  Lent discussions and activities
We will pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary all during Lent and pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet on Fridays.
Saint of the Week:  Saint Katherine Drexel
Stations of the Cross:  Wednesday afternoons

Reading/English:  Unit 9:  Reading Literature:  Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
-skills:  look and listen for long o, long u, and long e vowel sounds in a story, review the targeted phonics skills of o-consonant-e, vowel teams oa, ow, ee, and ea, and shades of meaning

Spelling:  long i (ie, igh) words
-pretest Monday
-final test Friday

Spelling Word Lists:

List 1:  bright, high, lie, light, might, night, pie, right, tie, tight, above, laugh

List 2:  flies, delight, tried, firefighter, sight, knelt, knock, shipwreck, wreath, wrong, above, laugh

Math:  Chapter 7:  Compare Numbers
-skills:  greater than, less than, use symbols to compare, and problem solving-compare numbers

Science:  Inventions
-Discuss how inventions change our environment and the way we have practiced things previously.

Social Studies:  Newspaper in Education Week
-We will do various activities using the newspaper.

Notes from the Teacher:
-March 6-10 is National School Breakfast Week.  Parents may come in and eat breakfast with their child before school on the following days:  March 7- “Muffins with Mom” and   March 9- “Donuts with Dad.”  Breakfast serving will start at 7:00 on these days instead of the usual time (7:15).

-Registration to attend OCS for the 2017-2018 School Year for CURRENT families will be from March 6- March 17. This year you MUST do 3 things before you can apply for Financial Assistance:
1) Register online   2) Turn in a parish voucher   3) Pay the $50 registration fee
If you do this by March 17, the $50 goes  toward your tuition.  Registration helps us plan for staffing for next year, so please register early!  If your child will need After School Care, you will also sign up for this during online registration. This program fills up quickly, so don’t delay in signing up!


-We are collecting new stuffed animals and dolls for children in foster care in Kentucky for a Lenten Service Project.  The donation deadline is March 31.  Thank you!
