1ST GRADE NEWSLETTER ~ MAY 15-19, 2017

Religion:  Chapters 17-20:  Jesus' Followers Become the Church, We Celebrate Pentecost, The Church Helps the World, and We Pray with Holy Songs
-We will pray the Glorious Mysteries of the rosary this week.
-Saint of the Week:  Joan of Arc

Reading/English:  Unit 14:  Reading Informational Text:  Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
-skills:  multiple meaning words, inflectional endings, phrases, main ideas, author's opinions and reasons to support those opinions, and compare and contrast texts

Spelling:  review 
We will review words learned this year.
There will be NO SPELLING TEST this week!

Math:  first grade review
-skills:  review of first grade skills learned

Science:  sink or float
Discuss what makes things sink or float.

Social Studies:  We will make a memory book of first grade.

I want to thank all you wonderful parents for helping with the AR Picnic!  What a fun time we had playing in the rain!  Thanks so much for bringing the coolers, gathering the tables at the park, and then waiting in the rain for almost 2 hours for us to finally get there!  You made the day extra special!  Thanks again!  


  I can’t believe it is already the end of the school year.  It seems to have flown by!  I want you to know that I have enjoyed every minute with your children. This is a very special class.  They are smart, religious, and lots of fun!  We have had some great times.  Thank you for sharing them with me this year!  




Last Day of School -Closing Mass- May 18- 9:00
We will have a special Closing Mass at 9:00 on the last day of school.  School is dismissed after the Service. If you are not attending, please pick your child up at school at 11:00. Please let me know how your child is getting home, especially if they are riding with someone else. We will not be using buses on the last day of school.  A letter was sent home last week for you to fill out.  Thank you!

May 17-Beach Day in the cafeteria-Students may bring a beach towel to sit on during lunch.
May 18- 9:00- Closing Mass- Last Day of School- This is a ½ day.  Students are dismissed at 11:00.  We will not be serving lunch on this day. No After School Program or buses home.  All students must be picked up by a parent after Mass or by 11:00.

We will pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the rosary this week.
Saint of the Week:  Our Lady of Fatima

Reading:   Unit 11:  Reading Informational Text:  Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
skills:  compare and contrast two texts on the same topic, key details, review of syllables, inflectional endings, irregularly spelled words, ABC order to the 1st and 2nd letter, putting things in categories by 1 or more attribute

Spelling:  oi and oy words
-pretest Monday
-final test THURSDAY this week

Spelling Word Lists:

List 1:  oil, soil, voice, point, boy, boil, coin, oink, toy, join, against, heavy

List 2:  avoid, choice, enjoy, royal, joint, poison, collector, painter, reporter, visitor, against

Math:  preparation for 2nd grade
skills:  fractions, area, and perimeter

Science:  We will talk about the water cycle this week.

Social Studies:  We will talk about prejudice and discrimination this week.

Our AR picnic is Friday of this week.  (Pray for no rain!!!)  STUDENTS WILL NOT NEED TO BRING THEIR BACKPACKS TO SCHOOL FRIDAY.  Thank you to all the volunteers.  We couldn’t do it without you help!  I just love the picnic.  It’s always lots of fun and the kids have a blast!  If you are volunteering, please meet us at the park by 8:35 or so.  The 2nd and 3rd grade students will leave school at 8:30.  We will load the buses around 8:45 for the park.  If you are a volunteer, please work with our other volunteers from our room to gather 2 picnic tables and find a spot in the shade close to the playground.  We will meet there for lunch and the children will have their drinks there as well.  Thanks!  STUDENTS NEED TO BRING 2 SCREWTOP DRINKS TO SCHOOL FRIDAY FOR THE AR PICNIC.  PLEASE PUT THEIR NAME ON BOTH DRINKS.  NO COKES, PLEASE!  I know we will have a wonderful time!

 
-Thank you to all who have volunteered to help with the AR picnic!  I really appreciate it.  I know how difficult it is to get off from work.
