1ST GRADE NEWSLETTER ~ JANUARY 30-FEBRUARY 3, 2017

Religion:  Catholic Schools Week Lessons
We will pray the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary this week.
Saint of the Week:  Saint Angela Merici

Reading/English:  All About Penguins unit
-skills:  penguins, adaptations, types of penguins, life cycle of a penguin, locating penguins on the map, prefixes (pre-, un-, dis-, re-), open and closed syllables

Spelling:  Catholic Identity Words
-pretest Monday
-final test Friday - All Students will get the same list this week.

Spelling Word List:
Mary, Jesus, angel, Bible, candle, faith, cross, God, Lord, holy, nun, Father

Math:  Chapter 4:  Subtraction Strategies
-skills:  use 10 to subtract, break apart to subtract, problem solving-use subtraction strategies, addition and subtraction math drills, 101st day of school activities

Science:  All About Penguins unit
  
Social Studies:  Groundhog Day

**All students may bring in valentines to exchange on Tuesday, February 14.  Due to our policy on snacking and food allergies, children are NOT allowed to bring in valentines with ANY type of candy attached to them or valentines that are packages of candy. There is no way to monitor and ensure that all candy brought in is safe. IF your child brings cards with candy, we will have to send them back home. Thank you for helping us keep all of our children safe.  Students may wear RED tops with their uniform bottoms on Valentine’s Day!**

-There will be NO After School Program on February 5 after the Grandparents Program.
Due to the fact that in past years, we have had very few students stay in the After School Program on Grandparents Day, the After School Program will not operate on February 5. If your child will not be going home with a grandparent, please make other arrangements. If your child is going home with a grandparent or someone else, please let his /her teacher know. Thank You.

-Thank you for all the donations of the shoe boxes.  We have enough for our STEM project, now.  Thanks!

Reading/English:  Unit 7:  Reading informational text:  craft and structure
-skills:  ask and answer questions to figure out the meaning of words, use text features to find information, compare and contrast
texts, unit 7 summary, prefixes and suffixes (re-, -ful)

Spelling:  er, est words

-final test Friday

-THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE DONATED SHOE BOXES FOR OUR STEM PROJECT! WE HAVE A GOOD START, BUT ARE STILL IN NEED OF SHOE BOXES AND/OR TISSUE BOXES FOR A FEBRUARY STEM PROJECT!  IF YOU HAVE ANY THAT YOU WOULD BE WILLING TO DONATE, IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! THANK YOU!

We will pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary this week.

Reading/English:  reading informational text:  craft and structure
skills:  distinguish between information given in pictures and information given by words, long a, long o, and r-controlled vowels, prefixes and suffixes

Spelling:  r-controlled er, ir, ur words
-pretest Monday
-final test Friday

Spelling Word Lists:

List 1:  bird, burn, first, fur, girl, her, hurt, shirt, sir, were, visit, done
