1ST GRADE NEWSLETTER ~ MAY 23-27, 2016

Religion:  We will discuss the Works of Mercy this week. 
We will pray the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet.
Saint of the Week:  St. Matthias

Reading/English:  
-discuss multiple meaning words, talk about different names for "home," review unit 11, memory book

Spelling:  review 
-we will review words they've learned this year, spelling bee

Math:  review of standards
-review weak skills from the skills test and prepare for 2nd grade

Science/Social Studies:  
-students will describe their idea of the perfect home

Notes from the Teacher:

-Last Day Prayer Service- May 27- 10:00    We will have a Prayer Service to celebrate the year and to send our 3rd grade students off as they leave the K-3 Campus. School is dismissed after the Service at 11:00.  If you are not attending, please pick your child up at school at 11:00. Please let me know how your child is getting home, especially if they are riding with someone else. We will not be using buses on the last day of school.  Thank you!

I’ve had a wonderful school year with a great class!  It’s hard to believe it’s over.  I hope you all have a blessed summer filled with family, friends, and fun times!  I will miss you all!  :)

Reading/English:  
-reading informational text:  integration of knowledge and ideas - inflectional endings, reading in phrases, main idea, identify an author's opinions and the reasons given to support those opinions, compare and contrast two texts on the same topic, determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases

Spelling:  aw, au words
-pretest Monday
-final test THURSDAY this week (because of the AR picnic)

Religion:  Chapter 20:  We Pray With Holy Songs
We will pray the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet.
Saint of the Week:  Our Lady of Fatima

Reading/English:  reading informational text:  integration of knowledge and ideas - compare and contrast two texts on the same topic, key details, inflectional endings, irregularly spelled words, two-syllable words, reading in phrases, and putting things in categories by 1 or more attributes

Spelling:  oi/oy words
-pretest Monday
-final test Friday

Spelling Word Lists:

List 1:  oil, soil, voice, point, boy, boil, coin, oink, toy, join, against, heavy

List 2:  avoid, choice, enjoy, royal, joint, poison, collector, painter, reporter, visitor, against, heavy

Math:  Review of standards
skills-review standards we've been working on in the last few chapters (number and operations in base ten, geometry, operations and algebraic thinking, and measurement and data), review weak skills and prepare for 2nd grade 

Science/Social Studies:  famous people and their contributions
-students will pick an important scientist in history, gather information, write a report on the scientist, and present it to the class

Thank you for all the sweet notes and goodies for Teacher Appreciation Week!  I enjoyed all the kind words!  I know I have gained 5 pounds because of all the yummy treats!  Thank you for your thoughtfulness!
