1ST GRADE NEWSLETTER ~ JANUARY 2-6, 2016

Religion:  We will discuss Christmas, Epiphany, and Mary the Mother of God.
We will pray the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary this week.
Saint of the Week:  Mary, Mother of God

Reading/English:  reading informational text:  craft and structure
-skills:  ask and answer questions to figure out the meaning of words, ask key details in a text read aloud, prefix (re-) and suffix (-ful), sounds for ending -ed

Spelling:  -ed words
-pretest Monday
-final test Friday

Spelling Word Lists:

List 1:  ask, asked, call, called, help, helped, jog, jogged, plan, planned, again, soon

List 2:  artist, charge, garden, parking, started, dropped, flipping, planned, shutting, swimming, again, soon

Math:  Chapter 3:  Addition Strategies
-skills:  doubles plus 1 and doubles minus 1, practice addition strategies, add 10 more, and make a 10 to add

Science:  We will discuss dental hygiene this week

Social Studies:  We will talk about the Pledge of Allegiance and what it means.

-Report cards will be sent home Monday and need to be signed and returned to school.  Thank you!

-WE WILL HAVE SHOW AND TELL FRIDAY.  Your child may bring 1 thing he/she received for Christmas to share with the class.  It must be small enough to fit into their backpack.  PLEASE DO NOT SEND IN ELECTRONIC ITEMS.  They are just too fragile and precious!  Thanks!

1ST GRADE NEWSLETTER ~ DECEMBER 12-16, 2016

Religion:  We will discuss Our Lady of Guadalupe and Juan Diego and Advent this week.  We will pray the Luminous Mysteries of the rosary.
Saint of the week:  St. Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe

Reading/English:  
--read several short Christmas passages and answer comprehension questions, compare and contrast the passages, adjectives

Spelling:  Christmas words
-We will work on Christmas words all week.  There will NOT be a test this week.

Spelling Word List:
bell, candy, snow, Jesus, birthday, love, holly, gift, joy, angel, elf, Advent


Math:  Chapter 3:  Addition Strategies
-skills:  review use doubles to add, center games and lessons on addition strategies

Science:  stars and constellations

Social Studies:  holidays and holiday traditions around the world

Notes from the Teacher: 
-Friday is Polar Express Day.  The children may bring a towel or small blanket to sit on during
 the movie and a small pillow if they would like. They may bring a drink for snack (in the room).
 It must be a screw top beverage or water.  NO COKE, PLEASE.

 -Don’t forget that we are partnering with the Glenmary Sisters to gather items for those in need.
    The first grade is collecting hats, scarves, gloves, coats, and socks.  If your family would like to donate, please send them in to school by December 14.  Thank you!

Reading/English:  Text Types and Purposes:  Write Fictional Narratives
-skills:  finish fictional narrative they wrote last week (edit and rewrite), orally present the fictional narrative to the class, pronouns, and adjecitves

Spelling:  ending -es, plural -es words
-pretest Monday
-final test Friday

about how your child is getting home after the Christmas Program on December 9 and return it by WEDNESDAY, December 7.  Thank you!   J

 -Our Christmas Program is Friday, December 9 at 12:30 in the GYM. The children are asked to dress up and wear Christmas Colors!  Parents may take children home after the program is over. There is NO After School Program.
