1ST GRADE NEWSLETTER ~ SEPTEMBER 28-OCTOBER 2, 2015

Religion:  Chapter 1:  We Belong to Jesus' Church
We will pray the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary this Week.
Saint of the Week:  St. Therese of Liseux

Reading:  
-skills:  digraphs sh and th, procedural text, connection between two ideas in a text, answer questions about key details in a text read aloud

Spelling:  digraph sh and th words
-pretest-Monday
-final test-Friday

Spelling Word Lists:

List 1:  fish, rush, shell, ship, shop, shut, then, thin, trash, with, want, good

List 2:  brush, shack, fresh, bath, thank, thick, bald, salt, talk, walking, want, good

Math:  
skills:  subtraction concepts, take apart numbers, using a number path (number line) to find an unknown part

Science:  Chapter 3:  How Plants/ Animals Live

Social Studies:  We will discuss talents required for various jobs this week.

  • -Our Prayer day is October 30.  Volunteers are needed from 8:00-11:00.  If you can help, please let me know.  Thank you!

  • -REMINDER:   I have been sending home vocabulary words along with the one breath boxes and reading books in a baggie. The baggies contain reading logs that need to be signed and returned on Thursdays.  The vocabulary words should also be practiced daily and returned by Thursday of each week.  Thanks!

  • -This year uniform sweatshirts may be purchased at the Central Office/SCRIP Office. We will not be taking orders for sweatshirts at the school level. School uniform sweatshirts are the only sweatshirts that students are allowed to wear at school during the day.

1ST GRADE NEWSLETTER ~ SEPTEMBER 21-25, 2015

We will pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary this week.

Reading:   
-skills:  short u, reading informational text, key ideas and details in a text, main topic, connection between two ideas in a text

Spelling:  short u words
-pretest Monday
-final test Thursday

Spelling Word Lists:

List 1:  bump, bus, cut, jump, must, nut, rug, run, sun, up, many, into

List 2:  bust, dusk, hunting, skunks, went, held, clasp, stamp, drift, milk, many, into

Math:  
-skills:  putting together numbers to 10, addition to 10 (challenge to higher two-digit numbers)

Science:  Chapter 2:  Habitats - forest, desert, rain forest, ocean

Social Studies:  We will discuss Johnny Appleseed this week.

1ST GRADE NEWSLETTER ~ SEPTEMBER 7-11, 2015

Religion:  Chapter 6:  Baptism is a wonderful gift
We will pray the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary this week.
**STUDENTS MAY BRING IN A BABY DOLL FRIDAY TO REENACT THEIR BAPTISM.**

Reading:  
skills:  inflected endings (-s), text types and purposes:  writing nonfictional narratives, sequencing with time order words, review of common and proper nouns

Spelling:  inflected endings -s

-I am amazed at how the children have embraced AR!  They are reading all the time! 
I’m very proud of them!

-Our first PTO meeting of the year is Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 6:00 in the K-3 Cafeteria.

-We took our first MAP test (reading) last Wednesday.  This week we will take the math part.  We’ll discuss the results at parent-teacher conferences.

-The children are really getting into the groove of school.  It’s hard to believe it’s already September!


-We will reenact our Baptism Friday at school.  Your child may bring in a baby doll for this.  Please make sure the doll is small enough to fit in their backpacks.
