1ST GRADE NEWSLETTER ~ FEBRUARY 27-MARCH 3, 2017

Religion:  We will discuss Lent this week.
We will pray the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary.
Saint of the Week:  Saint Brigid of Ireland
Ash Wednesday Mass is Wednesday at 9:00.

Reading/English:  Dr. Seuss
-skills:  talk about Dr. Seuss, celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday, rhyming words

Spelling:  rhyming/Dr. Seuss words
-pretest Monday
-final test Thursday

Spelling Word Lists:

List 1:  March, thing, Wednesday, feed, clock, free, ring, sock, fun, need, tree, run

List 2:  Theodor, double, Seuss, gold, right, hound, stew, sound, bright, trouble, screw, told

Math:  Chapter 5:  Addition and Subtraction Relationships
-skills:  facts practice to 20, review equal and not equal, chapter 5 test, chapter 6 pretest

Science:  We will be talking about how science and technology have improved food quantity and quality.

Social Studies:  National Anthem
We will discuss the meaning behind the National Anthem, the importance of singing it before sporting events, and discuss the Star Spangled Banner words.

Notes from the Teacher:
-March 6-10 is National School Breakfast Week.  Parents may come in and eat breakfast with their child before school on the following days:  March 7- “Muffins with Mom” and   March 9- “Donuts with Dad.”  Breakfast serving will start at 7:00 on these days instead of the usual time (7:15).

-Registration to attend OCS for the 2017-2018 School Year for CURRENT families will be from March 6- March 17. This year you MUST do 3 things before you can apply for Financial Assistance:
       1)    Register online 2) Turn in a parish voucher 3) Pay the $50 registration fee
If you do this by March 17, the $50 goes toward your tuition.  Registration helps us plan for staffing for next year, so please register early!  If your child will need After School Care, you will also sign up for this during ONLINE registration. This program fills up quickly, so don’t delay in signing up!

Religion:  Unit 3 Wrap Up
We will pray the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary this week.
Saint of the week:  Saint Francisco and Jacinta Marto

Reading/English:  Unit 9:  Reading Literature:  Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
-skills:  use story illustrations and text to describe characters, setting, or events, answer questions about key details in a text read aloud, and shades of meaning

Spelling:  long o:  oa, ow words
-pretest Monday
-final test Friday

Spelling Word Lists:

List 1:  blow, boat, coat, loaf, pillow, road, row, snow, soap, yellow, once, wild

List 2:  boast, coach, loaded, roamed, growth, rainbows, shrimp, spring, stripes, throat, once, wild

Math:  Chapter 5:  Addition and Subtraction Relationships
-skills:  choose an operation, ways to make numbers to 20, equal and not equal, place value

Science:  Problem / Solution
-groups will be given a problem and will work together to plan a solution, then present their solution to the class

Social Studies:  Presidents' Day
-compare and contrast Abraham Lincoln and George Washington

Reading/English:  Unit 8:  Text Types and Purposes:  Write Opinion Pieces
-skills:  finish opinion pieces about their favorite place in their neighborhood, orally present an opinion piece, review unit 8, conjunctions

Tuesday is Valentine’s Day! **All students may bring in valentines to exchange on Tuesday, February 14.  Due to our policy on snacking and food allergies, children are NOT allowed to bring in valentines with ANY type of candy attached to them or valentines that are packages of candy. There is no way to monitor and ensure that all candy brought in is safe. IF your child brings cards with candy, we will have to send them back home. Thank you for helping us keep all of our children safe.
Students may wear RED or PINK tops with their uniform bottoms on Valentine’s Day!**
