1st GRADE NEWSLETTER ~ FEBRUARY 1-5, 2016

Religion:  Catholic Schools Week lessons
We will pray the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary this week.
We will also pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

Reading/English:  All About Penguins unit
skills:  penguins, adaptations, types of penguins, penguins vs. birds, locating penguins on the map

Spelling:  Spelling Bee
We will have a spelling bee this week between all the first grades.  5 children will compete from each first grade.  There will be no spelling list/test this week.

Math:  Chapter 7:  Compare Numbers
skills:  problem solving - compare numbers, 10 more, 10 less, 100th day of school activities

Science:  All About Penguins unit

Social Studies:  Groundhog Day

-Congratulations to our Classroom Spelling Bee winners who will compete in the first grade spelling bee on Thursday:  Sam Brauer, Abby Hyland, Tyler Blandford, Adrienne Owens, and Tyce Boling!  Great job!  Good luck Thursday!
-There are many activities happening this week.  Please check the “Upcoming Events”  to see what is special for each day.
-In appreciation of all my wonderful students, we will have a special MOVIE DAY Tuesday.  Your child may bring a pillow and blanket/towel to school.

NEWSLETTER ~ JANUARY 25-29, 2016

Our newsletter this week is basically the same as last week because we were only there one day!  The spelling lists are the same and the spelling test will be Friday.

1ST GRADE NEWSLETTER ~ JANUARY 18-22, 2016

Religion:  Chapter 12:  We Pray with God's Words
We will pray the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary this week.
We will also pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet.
Saint of the Week:  Saint John Bosco

Reading:  reading informational text:  craft and structure
skills:  ask and answer questions to figure out the meaning of words, use text features to find information, compare and contrast texts, unit summary

Spelling:  -er, -est words
-The pretest was given last Friday and the word lists were passed out.
-final test Friday

Spelling Word Lists:

List 1:  bigger, biggest, faster, fastest, slower, slowest, shorter, shortest, sadder, saddest, good-bye, before

Notes from the Teacher

There will be NO After School Program on February 5
Due to the fact that in past years, we have had very few students stay in the After School Program on Grandparents Day, the After School Program will not operate on February 5. There will be NO After School Program on Grandparents Day. If your child will not be going home with a grandparent, please make other arrangements. Thank You.


-Exchanging Valentine's cards is a favorite activity for elementary students. All students may bring in valentines to exchange on Friday, February 12.  Due to our policy on snacking and food allergies, children are NOT allowed to bring in valentines with ANY type of candy attached to them or valentines that are packages of candy. There is no way to monitor and ensure that all candy brought in is on the safe snack list. IF your child brings cards with candy, we will have to send them back home. Thank you for helping us keep all of our children safe.

Reading:  reading informational text:  craft and structure
-skills:  procedural texts, title, topic, prefixes and suffixes, sounds of er, ir, ur ("bossy r")

Spelling:  er, ir, ur words ("bossy r"), contractions
-pretest Monday
-final test Friday

Spelling Word Lists:

List 1:  bird, burn, first, fur, girl, her, hurt, shirt, sir, were, visit, done

Math:  Chapter 6:  Count and Model Numbers
-skills:  model, read, and write numbers from 100-120, counting on a 120 chart, finding numbers that are the same (ex. same as 8 tens 7 ones), test on modeling and writing numbers

-light energy, heat energy, sound energy, how you get energy

Social Studies:  Maps and Map Skills
-review map directions and map vocabulary, practice reading and locating things on maps

Notes from the Teacher

--Grandparent program is Feb. 5 at 12:30 in the gym. The program is followed by Open House.  Students may go home with a grandparent after the Open House.  PARENTS MUST SEND IN A PERMISSION SLIP FOR CHILDREN TO LEAVE WITH THEIR GRANDPARENT.  If you do not have any grandparents in town, parents or friends are welcome to “fill in” and come to the program and Open House.  The permission slip was sent home today (Monday).

We will pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the rosary this week.

Reading/English:  Unit 7:  Reading Informational Text:  Craft and Structure
skills:  ask and answer questions to figure out the meaning of words, ask key details in a text read aloud, prefixes (re-) and suffixes (-ful), sounds for inflected ending -ed, er, ir, and ur sounds in words 

Spelling:  -ed words
-pretest Monday
-final test Friday

Spelling Word Lists:

List 1:  ask, asked, call, called, help, helped, jog, jogged, plan, planned, again, soon

List 2:  artist, charge, garden, parking, started dropped, flipping, planned, shutting, swimming, again, soon

skills:  tens and ones-compare tens rods and tens frames, tens and ones to 50, tens and ones to 100, and show numbers in different ways

We will discuss what gives off heat and what energy can do.  We will also talk about different forms of energy.

We will discuss cardinal and intermediate directions, map legends, globes, and continents
