1ST GRADE NEWSLETTER ~ MARCH 21-25, 2016

Religion:  We will discuss Holy Week.  We will pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary.

Stations of the Cross - Thursday at 12:30

Reading/English:   Unit 9:  Reading Literature:  Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
-skills:  use story illustrations and text to describe characters, settings or events, compare and contrast texts, review, synonyms, and shades of meaning 

Spelling:  compound words
-pretest Monday
-final test Friday

-Annual Holy Week Drive Sponsored by NHS at Owensboro Catholic High School-  Please bring in your donations between March 21- March 25. There will be boxes in the LOBBY at the K-3 Campus. DONATION SUGGESTIONS:
Paper Products- toilet paper, paper towels, aluminum foil, plastic wrap
Personal Products- razors, toothpaste, soap, toothbrushes, combs, deodorant

Food Items- canned goods of any kind, coffee, tea, canned fruit, sugar, flour, spices

Religion:  Chapter 16:  The Holy Spirit Helps Us Pray
We will pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary all during Lent.
Saint of the Week:  Saint Patrick
Stations of the Cross - Thursdays at 12:30

Reading / English:  Unit 9:  Reading Literature:  Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
-skills:  look and listen for long o, long u, and long e vowel sounds in a story, review the targeted phonics skills of o-consonant-e, vowel teams oa, ow, ee, and ea, and shades of meaning 

Spelling:  long i (ie, igh) words
-pretest Monday
-final test Friday

Spelling Word Lists:

List 1:  bright, high, lie, light, might, night, pie, right, tie, tight, above, laugh

List 2:  flies, delight, tried, firefighter, sight, knelt, knock, shipwreck, wreath, wrong, above, laugh

Math:  Chapter 9:  Measurement
-skills:  tell time to the hour and half hour, review measuring using standard and nonstandard units

Science:  sound
-review sound, continue work on stem activitiy (making a musical instrument)

Social Studies:  St. Patrick
Talk about the history of St. Patrick and discuss the Holy Trinity.

-skills:  use story illustrations and text to describe characters, setting, or events, answer questions about key details in a text read aloud, and make connections across texts by comparing characters, shades of meaning

Spelling:  long o (oa, ow) words
-pretest Monday
-final test Friday
