1ST GRADE NEWSLETTER ~ NOVEMBER 23-24, 2015

Religion:  We will read the daily gospels and discuss them.
We will pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary.
Saint of the Week:  St. Catherine Laboure

Reading/English:  
-read stories about Thanksgiving and write about things we are thankful for
-discuss nouns and verbs

Spelling:  
-review long and short vowels and silent e

Math:  
-problem solving, fact families, hundreds chart activities

Science/ Social Studies:
-discussions about the Mayflower and coming to the new world, the first Thanksgiving, Pilgrim boys and girls compared to boys and girls today

Notes from the Teacher:
-Our Mass is December 8 at 9:00.  The Mass parts have been handed out.  PLEASE PRACTICE WITH YOUR CHILD DAILY.  This will help them to become very familiar with their readings so they won’t have a difficult time when their “nerves” start to work on them when they are reading in Church!  J

-I hope you have a very Happy Thanksgiving!  Enjoy lots of family time!

Religion:  We will discuss holy people this week.  We will pray the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. 
Saint of the Week:  St. Cecelia

Reading/English:  unit 5:  reading literature:  craft and structure
skills:  identify sensory and feeling words, contrast the features of fictional and informational text, determine the narrator of a story, compare and contrast texts, identify verbs and their inflected forms, and identify root words

Spelling:  vowel sounds of y words
-pretest Monday
-final test Friday

Spelling Word Lists:

List 1:  any, body, by, cry, fly, lucky, my, puppy, silly, try, things, always

-This Friday, November 20, is a FREE DRESS DAY. 

-Friday is also OHRH Health assessments.  That’s always lots of fun for the children!

Religion:  We will be discussing saints this week.  We will pray the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary.
Saint of the Week:  St. Frances Xavier Cabrini

Reading/English:  Unit 5:  Reading Literature:  Craft and Structure
skills:  discuss genre:  adventure story, determine the narrator of a story, read decodable text featuring one-syllable CVC, CCVC, CVCe and CCVCe words, and read along orally, using emotion and reflecting changes in character

Spelling:  long e (e, ee) words
-pretest Monday
-final test Friday
